The SUMITOMO U101173 is a solid carbide mechanics-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It features a 135-degree split-point tip that reduces walking and minimizes thrust when starting a hole. The TiAlCr/TiSi dual coating improves heat resistance and extends tool life in demanding cutting conditions. With an overall length of 4.7638 inches and a flute length of 2.874 inches, this bit is sized for compact, close-quarter drilling applications common in machining and maintenance work. It is sold individually and is intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals.
This drill bit is well suited for production and maintenance drilling in cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, and non-ferrous metals including aluminum and copper alloys. The MDW-GS4 series is built for high-speed CNC machining centers and conventional drill presses where consistent hole quality and tool longevity are required. The tapered web configuration provides rigidity and chip clearance across the full flute length, making it a reliable choice for deep or repeated holes in tough workpiece materials.
Designed as a high-performance replacement or upgrade for solid carbide mechanics-length drill bits in the 29/64-inch diameter class, compatible with workpiece materials including cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, and non-ferrous metals as indicated by material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S.
This bit should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with carbide tooling. Secure the shank fully in the toolholder or collet before operation and verify runout is within acceptable limits, as carbide is brittle and sensitive to lateral loading. Use appropriate cutting speeds and feeds for the workpiece material — do not force the bit or use it as a lever. Coolant-through capability is not available on this model, so adequate external coolant or air blast should be applied when drilling stainless steel or other heat-sensitive alloys.
