The SUMITOMO U101116 is a solid carbide mechanics-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding industrial and metalworking applications. It measures 0.323 inches (8.20 mm, Letter size P) in diameter with a 135-degree split-point tip that promotes accurate self-starting and reduces thrust. The TiAlCr/TiSi combination coating extends tool life by resisting heat buildup and abrasive wear at elevated cutting speeds. With an overall length of 3.8583 inches and a flute length of 2.0866 inches, this bit fits the shorter mechanics-length format preferred when rigidity and minimal deflection are priorities. It is intended for use by machinists, toolroom technicians, and production-floor operators.
This drill bit is rated for use in cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and steel workpieces, covering a broad range of common production materials. The Series MDW-GS4 mechanics-length format suits drill press, CNC machining center, and manual mill setups where a short, stiff tool reduces chatter. The tapered web configuration provides added core strength as the drill penetrates deeper into hard or abrasive materials. Applications include through-hole and blind-hole drilling in general fabrication, mold and die work, and structural component machining.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collet tool-holders on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual milling machines. Rated for cast iron, non-ferrous metal, stainless steel, and steel workpieces per the MDW-GS4 series application guidelines.
Solid carbide drills should be installed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the spindle fully powered down and locked out before changing tooling. Verify chuck or collet concentricity before running at speed, as runout accelerates edge wear and can fracture carbide. Use manufacturer-recommended speeds and feeds for the specific workpiece material; do not apply cutting fluid incompatible with the TiAlCr/TiSi coating. Inspect the cutting edges and coating before each use and remove the bit from service at the first sign of chipping or coating breakdown.
