The SUMITOMO U101080 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-productivity drilling in ferrous and cast iron workpiece materials. At 17/64 inch (0.2656 inches) in diameter, this bit features a 135-degree split point angle that reduces walking and minimizes the need for a center punch on flat surfaces. The MDW-GS series construction uses a tapered web configuration with a straight-cylindrical shank, keeping the tool rigid and accurate in short-reach drilling applications. With an overall length of 2.874 inches and a flute length of 1.299 inches, this bit is suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and production environments where repeatable hole quality is required.
This drill bit is intended for use in production machining applications targeting cast iron and steel workpieces. The screw machine length format provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, making it well suited for tight-tolerance work in automated or semi-automated setups. The 2-flute geometry and coated carbide construction support efficient chip evacuation and extended tool life in high-cycle operations. Maximum drilling depth is 0.9006 inches (22.88 mm), and the 2xD flute-by-diameter ratio is optimized for shallow-to-moderate depth holes in hard materials.
Designed as a screw machine length replacement drill bit for production machining applications involving cast iron and steel workpieces, compatible with standard drill chucks and collets accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.2500 to 0.3000 inch diameter range.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully powered down and locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Ensure the chuck or collet is clean and free of debris before seating the shank to maintain concentricity. Solid carbide tooling is brittle and should not be subjected to side loads or interrupted cuts beyond the tool design parameters. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping before each use and replace if edge integrity is compromised.
