The SUMITOMO U100011 is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for high-speed, high-precision machining of hardened steel. Manufactured to the 2NCVNGA332 ANSI standard and ISO code 2NC-VNGA160408, this insert features a 35-degree diamond shape with a negative rake geometry and a PVD-applied titanium nitride (TiN) finish. The BNC300 grade delivers consistent edge retention and thermal stability under the demanding cutting conditions associated with hardened steel workpieces. With two cutting edges per insert, it provides productive tool life in a compact form factor suited to precision turning operations.
This insert is intended for CNC turning centers and precision lathes used in production and job-shop environments. Its primary workpiece material designation is hardened steel (Material Code H), making it well-suited to finishing and semi-finishing passes on hardened components such as bearing races, shafts, and gear blanks. The clamp and pin holding method ensures secure seating in compatible V-style insert toolholders. It is typically installed and changed by machinists or CNC operators following standard insert indexing procedures.
Designed for use in V-style VNGA insert toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick diamond insert with a 0.15-inch hole diameter. Conforms to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards for insert geometry interchangeability.
Insert changes should be performed with the machine at a full stop and all spindle motion confirmed halted before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torque driver for the clamping screw to ensure secure seating without over-stressing the insert body. Verify insert pocket cleanliness and seat condition before installation, as debris under the insert can cause premature edge failure or dimensional inaccuracy. PCBN inserts are brittle by nature and should not be dropped or subjected to intermittent cutting on heavily interrupted surfaces without confirming the grade is rated for that application.
