Product Description

The SUMITOMO 5VHY252 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for high-performance metal cutting in demanding production environments. Built from solid carbide and finished with a dual TiAlCr and TiSi coating, this bit delivers wear resistance and thermal stability required for cutting ferrous metals and difficult alloys. It features a 135-degree split-point geometry, a 14 mm diameter, and an overall length of 176 mm (6.929 inches). The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly into standard drill chucks or collet holders without adapters. This is a tool for machinists, tool-and-die shops, and CNC operators working in production metal cutting.

The 5VHY252 is rated for cutting cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, and high-temperature alloys, corresponding to ISO material codes K, M, P, and S. The 5xD flute-by-diameter ratio provides a 112 mm (4.409 inch) flute length suited for deep-hole drilling applications. Coolant-through capability allows internal coolant delivery directly to the cutting edge, which is critical when machining stainless steel or cast iron at production feed rates. This bit is part of the SUMITOMO MDW-HGS series, optimized for high-speed, high-efficiency drilling in CNC machining centers.

Key Features

  • Solid carbide construction with dual TiAlCr and TiSi coating for extended tool life in ferrous and hard materials
  • 135-degree drill point angle reduces entry thrust and improves self-centering on flat and curved surfaces
  • Coolant-through design delivers cutting fluid directly to the tip for heat management in deep-hole operations
  • 14 mm diameter with h8 tolerance on shank and cutting diameter for precise fitment in collet and hydraulic toolholders
  • Tapered web configuration improves chip evacuation and reduces torque demand at depth
  • 2-flute geometry balances rigidity with chip clearance across the rated 5xD depth range

Compatibility

Designed for use in CNC machining centers and drill presses accepting a 14 mm straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for ISO workpiece material groups K (cast iron), M (stainless steel), P (carbon and alloy steel), and S (high-temperature alloys) per the MDW-HGS series specification.

Installation Notes

Installation and tool changes should be performed with the machine in a full stop and lockout-tagout procedures in place. Seat the straight-cylindrical shank fully into the collet or chuck and verify runout before beginning a cut. Coolant-through toolholders are required to take advantage of the internal coolant channel. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and SUMITOMO MDW-HGS series recommended cutting parameters for feed rate and spindle speed by material type.
