The SUMITOMO 5VHY160 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance metal cutting in demanding production environments. It measures 4.8 mm in diameter with a 135-degree split point and a TiAlCr/TiSi dual-coating system that extends tool life in abrasive and high-heat applications. Overall length is 98 mm (3.858 inches), with a 44 mm (1.732 inches) flute length and a 5 mm straight-cylindrical shank. The two-flute geometry and tapered web configuration promote chip evacuation and reduce thrust in deep-hole drilling. Coolant-through capability is built in, making this bit well-suited to high-speed CNC machining operations where heat management is critical.
This drill bit is intended for cutting cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, and superalloys, covering ISO material codes K, M, P, and S. The MDW-HGS series is engineered for production-level metal cutting where tool consistency and surface finish matter. Typical applications include structural fabrication shops, aerospace component machining, and general machining cells running ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials. The 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio makes it appropriate for moderate-depth holes without pecking cycles when coolant through is active. Machinists and CNC operators in tool-and-die, job shop, and OEM manufacturing environments are the primary users.
The 5VHY160 is part of the SUMITOMO MDW-HGS series, rated for use in cast iron (ISO K), stainless steel (ISO M), carbon and alloy steel (ISO P), and superalloys (ISO S). It accepts straight-cylindrical shank toolholders with a 5 mm bore. Suitable for CNC machining centers and drill presses equipped with coolant-through spindle capability.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Secure the bit in a precision collet or hydraulic toolholder rated for the 5 mm shank diameter and verify runout before cutting. Confirm coolant-through lines are active and pressure is set per machine specifications before starting the spindle. Do not exceed the recommended cutting parameters for the workpiece material; consult the SUMITOMO MDW-HGS speed and feed chart for the specific ISO material code being machined.
