The SUMITOMO 5VHY111 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding metalworking applications. It carries a 0.5315 inch (13.50 mm) diameter with a 135-degree split point and a straight-cylindrical shank. The two-flute geometry and tapered web configuration promote chip evacuation and self-centering on entry. Built from solid carbide with a coated finish, this bit is suited for production drilling where tool life and hole accuracy are critical. Licensed machinists and tool-room technicians are the primary users. The bit belongs to Sumitomo's MDW-HGS series and supports coolant-through delivery for extended cutting in hard or abrasive materials.
This drill bit is rated for primary use in cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon and alloy steels. The screw machine length format — shorter overall length for increased rigidity — makes it well suited for CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and gang-drilling setups where stub-length tooling reduces deflection and improves positional accuracy. The h8 diameter tolerance on the shank ensures consistent fit in standard toolholders and collet chucks. Applications include high-volume production runs, precision component manufacturing, and maintenance shops requiring reliable hole sizing in ferrous materials.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard tooling option within the Sumitomo MDW-HGS series. Fits drill bit size range of 0.5000 to 0.6000 inches (13.50 to 17.00 mm). Compatible with coolant-through toolholders and standard straight-shank collet systems accepting a 14.00 mm (0.5512 inch) shank diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom technicians. Before changing tooling, confirm the machine spindle is fully stopped and the coolant system is off. Verify the toolholder or collet chuck is clean and free of chips before seating the shank. Confirm coolant-through passages in the spindle and holder are clear before enabling through-tool coolant flow to avoid pressure buildup at the cutting tip.
