The SUMITOMO 5VHY074 is a screw machine length solid carbide drill bit designed for high-performance hole-making in tough workpiece materials. Built to MDW-HGS series specifications, it features a 135-degree drill point angle, a tapered web configuration, and a straight-cylindrical shank for rigid, accurate seating in standard drill chucks and toolholders. Coolant-through capability allows internal delivery of cutting fluid directly to the cutting zone, reducing heat and extending tool life in demanding applications. The coated finish adds additional wear resistance. With a 9.80 mm (0.3858 inches) diameter and two margins, this bit is suited for precision drilling where hole quality and tool life are priorities.
The 5VHY074 is used in CNC machining centers, vertical mills, and drilling stations where screw machine length tooling is specified for rigidity and reduced deflection. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron, stainless steel, and steel, making it a go-to choice for job shops, production machining operations, and maintenance machinists working with ferrous and hard alloy components. The flute-by-diameter ratio of 3xD and a maximum drilling depth of 1.4685 inches (37.30 mm) suit through-hole and blind-hole applications at moderate depth-to-diameter ratios.
Designed as an OEM-specification screw machine length drill bit for use in standard straight-shank toolholders and drill chucks accepting a 10.00 mm shank diameter. Rated for primary workpiece materials of cast iron, stainless steel, and steel.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered down and fully stopped before tooling is handled. Confirm toolholder bore and collet size match the 10.00 mm straight-cylindrical shank before seating. Verify coolant-through passages in the spindle and toolholder are clear and properly connected before use. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine manufacturer guidelines when setting tool length offsets and feeds and speeds.
