The SUMITOMO 5VHY042 is a screw machine length solid carbide drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding metal cutting applications. The bit measures 6.60mm (0.2598 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 88mm (3.4646 inches) and features a 135-degree split-point geometry that promotes accurate self-centering and reduces walking on entry. Built from solid carbide with a coated finish, the 5VHY042 delivers extended tool life in abrasive and hard workpiece materials. The tapered web configuration and two-flute design support efficient chip evacuation, while the integrated coolant-through capability helps manage heat at the cutting zone during high-feed operations.
This drill bit is rated for use in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel, making it well suited for production machining environments, toolroom work, and precision fabrication shops. The screw machine length profile offers added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, which is particularly useful when drilling in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, or drill presses where shorter overhang reduces deflection. The straight-cylindrical shank with a 7.00mm (0.2756 inches) diameter fits standard ER and other common toolholder systems. It belongs to the MDW-HGS series and carries a 3xD flute-by-diameter ratio suitable for moderate-depth hole applications.
Designed for use in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. The straight-cylindrical shank is compatible with standard toolholder systems accepting a 7.00mm shank diameter. Part of the SUMITOMO MDW-HGS series; consult the series application guide for recommended feeds, speeds, and coolant pressure settings for specific workpiece materials.
Install and remove this bit using appropriate toolholders rated for the shank diameter; ensure the shank is fully seated and the holder is properly torqued before operation. Power down the machine and lock out energy sources before changing tooling. Verify coolant-through connections are secure and that coolant pressure is within the machine and toolholder specifications before starting a cut. Carbide tooling is brittle — avoid side loading, interrupted cuts beyond the tool rating, or dropping the bit on hard surfaces.
