The SUMITOMO 5L00W16 is a replaceable-tip drill designed for precision hole-making in metal cutting applications. It accepts SMDT-style inserts, allowing the cutting tip to be swapped out without replacing the full drill body. The tool covers a drilling diameter range of 23.81 mm to 24.8 mm (0.9374 to 0.9764 inches) and reaches a maximum drill depth of 3.385 inches, placing it in the 3xD depth-to-diameter ratio category. The 1-inch whistle notch shank provides secure, positive location in compatible toolholders. Through-coolant capability channels cutting fluid directly to the cutting zone, supporting chip evacuation and heat management at higher feed rates. Machinists and CNC operators in job shops and production environments are the primary installers of this tool.
The 5L00W16 is suited for drilling operations on machining centers and CNC lathes where a rigid, repeatable replaceable-tip system is preferred over solid carbide or brazed designs. The whistle notch shank is compatible with SMDH-series toolholders. With an overall length of 6.693 inches and a flute length of 4.443 inches, this drill fits standard tool magazine envelopes on vertical and horizontal machining centers. Through-coolant connection makes it well-matched to machines with internal coolant delivery systems, particularly in high-volume drilling of steel and ferrous workpiece materials.
Designed for use with SMDT-style replaceable inserts and SMDH-series toolholders within the SMD drill system. The 1-inch whistle notch shank is compatible with toolholders specifying a 1.0000-inch whistle notch bore.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Before mounting, confirm the toolholder bore matches the 1-inch whistle notch shank specification and that the machine spindle supports through-coolant delivery if that feature is required. Secure the shank fully into the toolholder and verify runout with a dial indicator before commencing a drilling cycle. When changing insert tips, follow the insert manufacturer torque guidance for the SMDT clamping screw and inspect the insert pocket for debris or damage before seating a new tip.
