The SUMITOMO 5L00W0Y is a replaceable-tip drill body engineered for precision hole-making in metal cutting applications. It accepts SMDT-style insert tips and is built around the SMD series platform, pairing a steel body with a 1-inch Weldon flat shank for positive, non-slip drive in compatible toolholders. The drill covers a diameter range of 21.51 to 22.80 mm (0.8469 to 0.8976 inches) and reaches a maximum drill depth of 4.882 inches at a 5xD depth-to-diameter ratio. Through-spindle coolant delivery channels coolant directly to the cutting zone, extending insert life and improving chip evacuation in deep-hole operations. Machinists and toolroom technicians working in production or job-shop environments will find this body well suited to high-feed drilling cycles.
The 5L00W0Y is intended for use in CNC machining centers and drill presses equipped with Weldon flat shank toolholders using the SMDH holder style. The 5xD depth-to-diameter ratio makes it a practical choice for moderate-depth bores in steel, cast iron, and similar ferrous workpiece materials. The replaceable-tip design reduces tooling cost per hole by allowing insert swaps without removing or re-indicating the body. Applications include through-hole and blind-hole drilling in general manufacturing, automotive, and heavy equipment component production.
Designed for use with SMDT-style replaceable insert tips and SMDH-series toolholders as part of the SUMITOMO SMD drill platform. The 1-inch Weldon flat shank is compatible with standard Weldon flat drive chucks and milling-style holders accepting that shank diameter.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before mounting or removing the drill body from the toolholder. Seat the Weldon flat shank fully into the holder and tighten the drive screw against the flat per the toolholder manufacturer's torque guidance. Verify through-coolant supply lines are connected and unobstructed before initiating a drilling cycle, and confirm insert tip seating and clamping prior to first use.
