The SUMITOMO 5L00W05 is a replaceable-tip drill designed for precision hole-making in metal cutting applications. It accepts SMDT-style inserts and is built on the SMD series platform, pairing a steel body with a 5/8-inch whistle notch shank for secure toolholder engagement. The drill covers a diameter range of 13 to 13.49 mm (0.5118 to 0.5311 inches) and reaches a maximum drilling depth of 2.906 inches, placing it in the 5xD depth-to-diameter category. Through-coolant capability directs cutting fluid directly to the tip for improved chip evacuation and tool life. Machining professionals and CNC operators working in production environments are the primary users.
This drill is suited for drilling operations in steel, cast iron, and similar workpiece materials where consistent hole quality and repeatable depth are required. The replaceable-tip design reduces downtime compared to solid carbide drills by allowing insert swaps without removing the body from the toolholder. The 5xD depth ratio makes it appropriate for moderately deep holes in a single pass on CNC machining centers and lathes equipped with through-spindle coolant. The whistle notch shank interfaces with SMDH-style toolholders, which must be used to correctly position and retain the body.
Designed for use with SMDT-style replaceable-tip inserts and SMDH-style toolholders as part of the SUMITOMO SMD series system.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by qualified machinists with the machine powered off and spindle fully stopped. The whistle notch shank requires proper seating in a compatible SMDH toolholder to ensure correct runout and insert retention. Verify through-coolant supply pressure and flow are appropriate for the insert grade and workpiece material before starting the cut. Follow the insert manufacturer torque specifications for the clamping screw when seating SMDT inserts.
