The SUMITOMO 5KHZW1A is a carbide replaceable tip drill designed for high-performance metal removal in demanding machining environments. Built to the SMD series standard, this drill features a solid carbide tip with a TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating applied through a physical vapor deposition process, delivering enhanced wear resistance and heat management at the cutting edge. The 140-degree included point angle supports aggressive entry into a wide range of workpiece materials. Through-coolant capability channels fluid directly to the cutting zone, extending tool life and improving chip evacuation. At 0.15 pounds, this is a lightweight, precision-ground insert-style drill body suited for CNC machining centers and production turning applications.
This drill is intended for use in production machining environments where replaceable tip geometry reduces downtime compared to regrindable solid drills. The ACX80 grade and universal primary workpiece material rating make it applicable across steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and superalloy workpieces. The MEL insert geometry is optimized for stable cutting action across this range of materials. It is typically installed and operated by CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals in job shop and production floor settings.
Designed as an OEM-style replaceable tip drill within the SUMITOMO SMD series platform. Compatible with workpiece material classifications K, M, P, and S as designated in the supplier specifications. Confirm body compatibility with SMD series holder dimensions before installation.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by qualified CNC machinists or tooling technicians with the machine powered down and in a safe state. Follow the machine tool manufacturer torque guidelines for tip seating using the appropriate SMD series wrench or key. Ensure through-coolant passages in the holder are clear and that coolant pressure meets the spindle system specifications before running. Inspect the tip seating surface for debris or wear before each tip change to maintain runout tolerances.
