The SUMITOMO 5KHZW15 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-productivity hole-making in metalcutting applications. It features a 1.0469 inch cutting diameter with a 140-degree included angle and a TiAlCr/TiSi PVD coating applied over a solid carbide tip insert with MEL geometry. Through-coolant capability is built in, allowing coolant delivery directly to the cutting edge for improved chip evacuation and tool life in deep-hole drilling operations. This drill is suited for machinists and tool-and-die professionals running production drilling in CNC machining centers.
The 5KHZW15 is rated for universal primary workpiece material compatibility, covering cast iron, stainless and alloyed steels, carbon and alloy steels, and superalloys as indicated by material codes K, M, P, and S. It is a practical choice for job shops and production environments where a single drill body must handle a range of workpiece materials without frequent grade changes. The replaceable tip design allows the cutting insert to be swapped without removing the drill body from the spindle, reducing downtime between tool changes.
Designed for use in the Sumitomo SMD series replaceable tip drill system. Compatible with workpiece materials classified under ISO codes K, M, P, and S, including cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, and high-temperature superalloys.
Installation and tip replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist following the tool holder manufacturer torque and seating specifications for SMD series inserts. Verify coolant passages are clear and system pressure meets machine requirements before running through-coolant operation. Inspect the drill body seating surface and tip pocket for damage or debris before each tip installation. Refer to applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements when changing cutting inserts at the spindle.
