The SUMITOMO 5KHZW0X is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD Series, designed for high-performance metal cutting across a broad range of workpiece materials. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide with an ACX80 grade designation and features a dual PVD coating of TiAlCr and TiSi for extended tool life and thermal resistance. The included point angle is 140 degrees, promoting stable entry and reduced thrust force. Through-coolant capability directs fluid directly to the cutting edge, supporting chip evacuation and heat management during deep-hole drilling operations. At 0.1 pounds, the insert is lightweight and straightforward to index in the field. This tool is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
The 5KHZW0X is suited for universal application across workpiece material categories including cast iron (K), stainless and heat-resistant steel (M), carbon and alloy steel (P), and superalloys (S). The SMD Series replaceable tip design allows the carbide tip to be swapped without removing the drill body from the spindle, reducing downtime on production lines and multi-axis machining centers. The MEL insert geometry is optimized for balanced cutting across this wide material range. Typical applications include through-hole and blind-hole drilling in aerospace, general manufacturing, and heavy equipment fabrication.
Designed for use with SUMITOMO SMD Series replaceable tip drill bodies compatible with the MEL insert geometry and 15/16 inch tip diameter. Confirm body series and tip seat compatibility before ordering.
Installation and tip indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC technician with the spindle fully stopped and machine in a locked-out state. Ensure the tip seat and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the carbide tip. Follow the drill body manufacturer torque specifications for the clamping screw — do not over-torque, as this can crack the carbide tip. Verify through-coolant line pressure and flow rate are within the drill body manufacturer's recommended range before resuming operation.
