The SUMITOMO 5KHZW0L is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the SMD series, designed for precision hole-making in a wide range of metallic workpieces. The drill features a solid carbide tip with a TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating applied through a physical vapor deposition process, delivering extended tool life in demanding cutting conditions. The 49/64 inch (19.45 mm) cutting diameter and 140-degree included angle make this drill well-suited for aggressive entry geometry and clean through-hole production. It includes integrated through-coolant capability to manage heat and chip evacuation at the cutting zone. The replaceable tip design allows the carbide insert to be swapped without discarding the drill body, reducing per-hole tooling cost. This is a tool for machinists and CNC operators working in professional shop environments.
The 5KHZW0L is rated for universal workpiece material compatibility, covering ISO material groups K, M, P, and S. This spans cast iron, steel, stainless steel, and superalloys, making the drill a versatile choice for job shops running mixed-material production. The MEL insert geometry is optimized for stable cutting action across this range. Through-coolant delivery supports higher feed rates and longer tool engagement in deep-hole applications. This drill is suited for CNC machining centers with internal coolant supply capability where consistent chip flushing is required.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers equipped with internal coolant delivery systems. Compatible with workpiece materials in ISO groups K, M, P, and S per manufacturer specification. Part of the Sumitomo SMD series replaceable tip drill platform.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer's toolholder torque and seating procedures. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the CNC control is in a safe state before accessing the spindle or changing the drill tip. Verify coolant supply pressure and flow rate are within the tool manufacturer's recommended range before initiating a cutting cycle. Do not operate the drill without coolant flow when through-coolant capability is required by the application.
