The SUMITOMO 5KHZW08 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD Series, designed for high-performance hole-making in a wide range of workpiece materials. It features a 37/64-inch diameter and a 140-degree included point angle, making it suitable for clean, accurate entry and exit in universal material applications. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlCr/TiSi dual-layer coating, providing thermal stability and wear resistance at elevated cutting speeds. Through-coolant capability is built in, allowing direct delivery of coolant to the cutting zone to control chip evacuation and heat. This drill is used by machinists and CNC tooling professionals in production and job-shop environments.
The 5KHZW08 is intended for use across universal workpiece material classifications, including ferrous, non-ferrous, stainless, and high-temperature alloy materials, as indicated by material codes K, M, P, and S. The replaceable tip design allows the carbide insert to be swapped without removing the drill body from the spindle, reducing changeover time on CNC machining centers, turning centers with live tooling, and dedicated drilling machines. The SMD Series body accepts this MEL geometry tip for applications requiring a standard 140-degree point angle.
Designed for use with SMD Series replaceable tip drill bodies accepting MEL geometry tips. Compatible with workpiece materials classified under universal codes K, M, P, and S, covering cast iron, steel, stainless steel, and heat-resistant superalloys.
Installation and tip changes should be performed by qualified machinists following the machine tool builder guidelines for replaceable tip drill bodies. The spindle must be stopped and the machine placed in a safe, locked-out state before seating or removing the carbide tip. Use the correct torque tool as specified by the drill body manufacturer for tip retention — do not overtighten or use improvised tools. Verify through-coolant passages are clear and coolant pressure is within the machine specification before resuming cutting operations.
