The SUMITOMO 5KHZ278 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-performance hole-making in a wide range of workpiece materials. It accepts a solid carbide MEL-geometry tip with a 140-degree included angle and a 27mm (1.063 inch) cutting diameter. The tip carries a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual-layer coating that supports extended tool life across ferrous and non-ferrous applications. Through-coolant capability is built in, allowing coolant delivery directly to the cutting zone to manage heat and chip evacuation during deep or high-feed drilling cycles. Licensed machinists, CNC operators, and tooling technicians are the primary users of this drill body.
The 5KHZ278 is rated for universal primary workpiece material compatibility, covering material codes K, M, P, and S. This range spans cast iron, stainless and heat-resistant steels, general carbon and alloy steels, and non-ferrous materials, making it a practical tool for job shops and production environments running varied materials. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost per hole by allowing tip indexing without discarding the drill body. It is suited for machining centers with through-spindle coolant capability where consistent bore quality and cycle efficiency are priorities.
Designed for use in machining centers equipped with through-spindle coolant and compatible with SUMITOMO SMD series drill bodies accepting the MEL replaceable tip format in the 27mm diameter class.
Installation and tip changes should be performed by a qualified CNC operator or tooling technician with the machine in a full stop and locked-out state. Ensure the drill body and tip seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the replaceable tip. Verify through-coolant connection integrity and confirm proper torque on the clamping mechanism per the toolholder manufacturer specifications before resuming operation. Do not operate this drill body without through-coolant active, as the cutting geometry and coating are optimized for cooled-cutting conditions.
