The SUMITOMO 5KHZ276 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-performance hole-making in a wide range of workpiece materials. It features a 26mm (1.0236 inch) cutting diameter, a 140-degree included angle, and a MEL insert geometry. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide with an ACX80 grade designation and coated via a PVD process with a dual TiAlCr and TiSi finish. Through-coolant capability allows direct delivery of cutting fluid to the tip during operation, supporting chip evacuation and tool life in demanding cutting environments. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, and metalworking professionals specify this drill for precision drilling applications.
The 5KHZ276 is suited for universal workpiece materials classified under material codes K, M, P, and S, covering cast iron, stainless steel, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys. This makes it applicable across a broad range of industrial machining scenarios including general-purpose production drilling, aerospace component work, and precision fabrication. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost by allowing tip exchange without discarding the drill body. It is sold individually and is appropriate for CNC machining centers and other machine tools equipped with through-coolant spindle capability.
Designed as a replaceable tip for use in compatible SUMITOMO SMD series drill bodies. Specific drill body compatibility should be confirmed against SUMITOMO SMD series tooling documentation prior to ordering.
Installation of replaceable carbide drill tips should be performed by a qualified machinist following the tooling manufacturer's seating and torque procedures. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before tip removal or installation. Inspect the drill body pocket for chips, wear, or damage before seating the new tip. Confirm through-coolant passages are clear and that the machine tool is configured to deliver adequate coolant pressure for the application.
