The SUMITOMO 5KHZ239 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-performance drilling in a wide range of workpiece materials. It features a 21.5 mm (0.8465 inch) cutting diameter and a 140-degree included angle suited for precise entry and reduced thrust force. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi multilayer coating, which improves wear resistance and thermal stability at cutting speeds common in production environments. Through-coolant capability channels fluid directly to the cutting zone, extending tool life and aiding chip evacuation in deeper hole applications. This drill is installed and managed by machinists and tooling technicians in CNC machining centers.
The 5KHZ239 is classified for universal application, compatible with workpiece material codes K, M, P, and S, covering cast iron, steel, stainless steel, and high-temperature alloys. The MEL insert geometry and ACX80 grade make it a versatile choice for both roughing and finish drilling cycles in automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking operations. It is packaged as a single unit and is well suited to shops standardizing on the SMD replaceable tip platform for reduced toolholder inventory.
Designed for use in the Sumitomo SMD series replaceable tip drill system. Rated for primary workpiece material codes K, M, P, and S, covering cast iron, general steels, stainless steels, and high-temperature alloys.
Installation and tip replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a fully stopped and locked-out state. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque and seating procedures for the SMD replaceable tip interface. Verify through-coolant passages are clear and that coolant pressure meets machine and toolholder specifications before running. Inspect the tip seating pocket for chips or wear before each tip change to ensure proper runout.
