The SUMITOMO 5KHZ231 is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the SMD Series, designed for high-productivity hole-making in a wide range of metalworking applications. The drill features an ACX80 grade solid carbide tip with a TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating applied via physical vapor deposition, delivering thermal resistance and edge durability in demanding cutting conditions. The MEL insert geometry and 140-degree included point angle support clean entry and stable chip formation. Through-coolant capability allows direct coolant delivery to the cutting zone, extending tool life and improving chip evacuation in deep-hole operations. This tool is intended for use by machinists and CNC operators in production environments.
The 5KHZ231 is suited for universal workpiece materials, covering ISO material groups K (cast iron), M (stainless steel), P (steel), and S (superalloys and titanium). Its replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost by allowing tip exchange without replacing the full drill body, making it a practical choice for high-volume production, job shop work, and aerospace or general engineering applications where consistent hole quality and repeatability are required.
The 5KHZ231 tip is designed for use within the SUMITOMO SMD Series replaceable tip drill system. Compatible with ISO material groups K, M, P, and S, covering cast iron, stainless steel, steel, and superalloys including titanium.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Ensure the replaceable tip is seated fully and torqued according to the drill body manufacturer specifications before use. Verify through-coolant passages are clear and that coolant pressure and flow rates are appropriate for the drill diameter and material being machined. Do not exceed the recommended feed and speed parameters for the selected workpiece material group.
