The SUMITOMO 5KHZ230 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for precision hole-making across a wide range of workpiece materials. It features a 17mm diameter cutting tip with a 140-degree included point angle and an MEL insert geometry. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide with an ACX80 grade designation and coated via PVD with a TiAlCr and TiSi finish for extended wear resistance and thermal stability. Through-coolant capability directs cutting fluid directly to the cutting edge, reducing heat buildup and improving chip evacuation in deep-hole applications. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production environments will find this drill suited to demanding applications.
The 5KHZ230 is rated for universal primary workpiece material compatibility, covering material codes K, M, P, and S — which correspond to cast iron, stainless steel, steel, and high-temperature alloys. This makes it a versatile choice for job shops and production machining cells running mixed-material workloads. The replaceable tip design allows the drill body to be reused while only the worn tip is swapped, reducing tooling cost per hole and minimizing downtime during changeover.
Designed as a replacement tip for SUMITOMO SMD series drill bodies that accept the MEL geometry tip format. Verify body diameter and tip seat compatibility with the drill body in use before ordering.
Replaceable tip drills should be installed and torqued according to the drill body manufacturer's tooling manual — do not use improvised tools to seat or remove the tip. Ensure the machine spindle and coolant lines are depressurized before tip replacement. Confirm through-coolant pressure and flow rate meet the tool manufacturer's requirements for the selected material group and cutting parameters. Tip changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician.
