The SUMITOMO 5KHY205 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD Series, designed for high-productivity drilling in steel and ferrous workpiece materials. This drill features a 22mm cutting diameter and a 140-degree point angle, providing a stable entry and consistent hole geometry. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide with an ACX70 grade and finished with a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi coating for extended tool life and heat resistance. Through-coolant capability delivers cutting fluid directly to the cutting edge, reducing thermal buildup and chip evacuation issues in deep-hole applications. This drill is intended for use by skilled machinists and tool-and-die professionals in production environments.
The 5KHY205 is suited for drilling steel and primary P-category workpiece materials in CNC machining centers and automated drilling operations. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost by allowing tip replacement without discarding the drill body. The MTL insert geometry and SMD Series body pairing are matched for rigidity and runout control in medium-to-deep drilling passes. Through-coolant support makes this drill effective in applications where chip clearing and temperature control are critical to hole quality and tool longevity.
Designed as a replaceable tip for use with compatible SMD Series drill bodies accepting the MTL geometry tip in 22mm diameter. Confirm body compatibility with the SMD Series before ordering.
Installation of replaceable carbide tips should be performed by a qualified machinist following the tool manufacturer's torque and seating procedures for the SMD Series body. Ensure the machine spindle and coolant lines are fully de-energized and depressurized before tip removal or installation. Use only the specified wrench or tool to seat the tip; do not overtighten or use improvised tools, as this can damage the carbide tip or body threads. Verify runout after installation before beginning production cuts.
