The SUMITOMO 5KHY193 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-efficiency hole making in steel and other ferrous workpiece materials. It features an ACX70 grade solid carbide tip with a dual-layer TiAlCr and TiSi coating for improved wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The 140-degree included angle point geometry suits a wide range of production drilling applications. Through-coolant capability delivers cutting fluid directly to the cutting edge, extending tool life and improving chip evacuation in deep-hole operations. This drill is intended for CNC machining center setups operated by qualified machinists and tooling specialists.
The 5KHY193 is suited for production drilling in steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material group P. It fits applications where replaceable-tip drill technology reduces tooling cost by allowing tip exchange without replacing the full drill body. The SMD series platform is a common choice in job shops and production machining environments running medium to high volume hole-making cycles. The MTL insert geometry and 17.5mm diameter make it appropriate for general-purpose steel drilling where tight hole tolerances and consistent entry geometry are required.
Designed as a replaceable tip for use with compatible SMD series drill bodies accepting a 17.5mm tip size. Confirm body model and tip seat dimensions before ordering to ensure proper fit.
Installation of this replaceable tip should be performed by a qualified machinist following the drill body manufacturer torque and seating guidelines for SMD series tips. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool is secured in a holder before tip removal or installation. Verify through-coolant ports on the drill body are clear before mounting the tip. Inspect the tip seat on the drill body for wear or debris that could affect tip seating and runout.
