The SUMITOMO 19RB296 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI insert code VNMG331 and ISO code VNMG160404, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and machining centers. This insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a CVD-applied AC830P coating that delivers moderate wear resistance combined with high toughness. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/64-inch corner radius, the 19RB296 is suited for both roughing and medium machining passes. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators working in job shops, production environments, and maintenance machining applications.
This insert is rated for use on steel (P-class) and stainless steel (M-class) workpiece materials, where the AC830P grade provides a balance of wear resistance and toughness across varying cutting conditions. The ENG chip breaker geometry is engineered for roughing and medium machining operations, helping to manage chip flow at moderate to heavy depths of cut. It is a negative-rake, negative-clearance insert held in place by clamp or pin-style toolholders, making it compatible with standard VNMG-style insert seats used across a wide range of turning tool bodies.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for VNMG331-style insert seats using clamp or pin holding methods. Compatible toolholders must accept a 0.150-inch hole diameter and negative-clearance VNMG geometry. ANSI size code 331; ISO size code 160404.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered off and the spindle locked. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket and torque the clamp or locking pin per the toolholder manufacturer specification. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating to avoid insert rocking or premature edge failure. Follow shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements before resuming cutting operations.
