The SUMITOMO 196DCNU is a coated carbide turning insert designed for metal cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the ANSI designation SNMG644 and the ISO designation SNMG190616, with the EEM chip breaker geometry and AC6040M grade coating applied via PVD process. The insert features a 3/4 inch inscribed circle, a 1/16 inch corner radius, and a 90-degree square shape with a negative rake and negative side clearance. It is suited for stainless steel workpiece materials where moderate wear resistance and toughness are required, and it handles roughing through medium machining operations.
This insert is used in turning applications where stainless steel is the primary workpiece material. The EEM chip breaker geometry is engineered for roughing and medium machining passes on austenitic and other stainless alloys. The AC6040M grade falls in the M-grade classification, targeting materials that demand a balance between wear resistance and edge toughness. It is held in place using either a clamp or a pin-type toolholder, and is compatible with negative-style SNMG toolholders. Machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments are the typical end users.
Designed for use in negative-style SNMG toolholders accepting a 3/4 inch inscribed circle square insert with a 0.3126 inch hole diameter, compatible with clamp and pin holding methods per ANSI and ISO 13399 standards.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and locked out before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench for the clamp screw and follow the toolholder manufacturer's seating procedure to ensure full contact on the insert pocket. Inspect the pocket for chips or wear before seating a new insert.
