The SUMITOMO 196DCLB is a CCMT-style carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the AC6040M manufacturer grade and features a PVD-applied Absotech coating engineered for wear resistance and edge stability. The insert measures 0.3819 inches in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a corner radius of 0.0315 inches, and a thickness of 0.1563 inches. Its positive rake geometry reduces cutting forces, making it well-suited for finishing and semi-finishing operations. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC operators using a screw-on holding method for secure, repeatable indexing.
The 196DCLB is intended primarily for cutting stainless steel and falls within the ISO material grade range of M30 to M40, covering austenitic and ferritic stainless alloys. The ELB chip breaker geometry is optimized for light-to-medium depth cuts where chip control and surface finish are priorities. It fits into standard CCMT-compatible tool holders and is appropriate for both production-floor CNC turning and tool-room applications. The AC6000M series coating process adds thermal stability and helps extend tool life in interrupted or continuous cuts on difficult-to-machine materials.
Designed for use in standard CCMT-compatible screw-on turning tool holders. Primary workpiece material is stainless steel, ISO material grades M30 and M40. ISO code CCMT09T308N-LB may be used for holder and tooling cross-reference.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool holder is secure before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the correct torque wrench and insert screw specified by the tool holder manufacturer — do not overtighten the clamping screw, as this can fracture the carbide. Inspect the pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert.
