The SUMITOMO 196CAPR is a solid carbide CVD-coated turning insert designed for precision metal-cutting applications on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert carries the ANSI designation VNMG331ESU and ISO designation VNMG160404N-SU, indicating a diamond-shaped insert (35-degree included angle) with a neutral hand orientation and zero-degree relief angle. The AC6030M grade with CVD coating is engineered specifically for cutting stainless steel and other difficult-to-machine materials. The ESU chip breaker geometry supports stable chip control during continuous turning passes. Installed by machinists and CNC operators, this insert fits standard VNMG toolholders using clamp and pin holding methods.
This insert is suited for turning operations on stainless steel workpieces in both production and job-shop environments. The VNMG331ESU geometry is appropriate for medium to light finishing cuts where consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required. The 35-degree diamond shape provides a sharp cutting edge with good clearance in tight profiling situations. The negative rake configuration and CVD coating work together to extend tool life under the elevated cutting temperatures common in stainless steel machining.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for VNMG-style toolholders accepting the 331 insert size. Verify toolholder pocket specifications against the ANSI code VNMG331ESU and ISO code VNMG160404N-SU before installation. Conforms to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the insert with the clamp and pin method. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper support and accurate cutting geometry.
