The SUMITOMO 196C812 is a solid carbide CVD-coated turning insert designed for precision metal-cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Conforming to ANSI code CNMG432EGUW and ISO code CNMG120408N-GUW, this insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a negative rake angle and a neutral hand orientation. The AC6030M manufacturer grade delivers a tough, wear-resistant substrate suited for demanding interrupted and continuous cuts. A 0.5-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thickness, and 1/32-inch corner radius define the insert geometry, while the EGUW chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip evacuation at moderate to high feed rates.
This insert is engineered primarily for turning stainless steel workpieces, where built-up edge and heat generation are common challenges. The CVD coating process provides a hard, thermally stable surface layer that extends tool life in these abrasive and work-hardening materials. Typical applications include OD turning, facing, and profiling operations on austenitic and ferritic stainless alloys in aerospace, food processing, medical, and general industrial manufacturing environments. The CNMG-style negative rake geometry suits heavy roughing through semi-finishing passes.
Designed for use in standard CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 1/2-inch inscribed circle insert with clamp and pin holding method. Compatible with toolholders conforming to ANSI CNMG432 and ISO CNMG120408 specifications.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine fully powered down and spindle locked. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces before engaging the clamp and pin; inspect the pocket for chips or debris before seating. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidelines for the clamping screw. Verify insert orientation and overhang per the tooling setup sheet before returning the machine to operation.
