The SUMITOMO 196C342 is a solid carbide CVD-coated turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the ANSI designation VNMG332EGU and ISO designation VNMG160408N-GU, placing it in the VN series with a 35-degree diamond shape and neutral hand orientation. The AC6030M grade coating is applied via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to deliver extended tool life and thermal resistance under continuous or interrupted cutting conditions. The EGU chip breaker geometry is matched to productive turning of stainless steel and similar difficult-to-machine alloys. Machinists and tooling technicians working on production turning operations will find this insert a direct-fit replacement for compatible VNMG toolholders.
This insert is primarily intended for turning stainless steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material code M. It is suited for general-purpose external and internal turning operations in production shop environments, including both roughing and finishing passes depending on depth of cut and feed rate selection. The negative rake geometry and N clearance code make it appropriate for rigid setups where consistent edge stability is required. Compatible with clamp and pin insert holding methods standard to VNMG-style toolholders.
Designed as a replacement turning insert for VNMG-style toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick, 35-degree diamond insert with clamp and pin holding. Conforms to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards for interchangeability verification.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered down and the spindle locked. Use the appropriate torque wrench for the clamp screw to avoid cracking the carbide substrate — refer to the toolholder manufacturer's torque specification for the fastener size used. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the insert, and confirm the insert is fully seated against all locating surfaces before resuming operation.
