The SUMITOMO 196C335 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CNMG432EGU geometry with AC6030M grade coating, designed for precision single-point turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. This insert features an 80-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code C), a neutral hand orientation, and a CVD-applied coating that delivers wear resistance at elevated cutting temperatures. The 0.5079-inch insert length, 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, and 0.0313-inch corner radius make it a standard CN-series insert suited to medium to finishing turning passes. It is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians on indexable insert toolholders using a clamp and pin holding method.
This insert is primarily applied to stainless steel workpieces (ISO Material Code M), including austenitic and duplex grades commonly encountered in aerospace, medical device, food processing, and general industrial machining. The EGU chip breaker geometry is engineered to manage the tough, stringy chips typical of stainless steel turning, reducing built-up edge and improving surface finish. It is well suited to light to medium depth-of-cut passes on CNC turning centers and manual engine lathes where dimensional accuracy and surface integrity are required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement turning insert for CN-series indexable toolholders that accept CNMG432 geometry inserts with clamp and pin holding. Confirm toolholder pocket specifications against the ANSI code CNMG432EGU before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a full stop, locked-out, and de-energized state. Use the correct torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the insert properly against the pocket walls. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before each insert index. Never run a chipped or cracked insert, as carbide fracture at cutting speed presents a serious hazard.
