The SUMITOMO 194ABTH is a cermet-coated turning insert designed for precision external and internal turning operations on steel workpieces. The insert carries the ANSI designation CNMG432EFL and ISO designation CNMG120408N-FL, featuring an 80-degree diamond shape with a neutral hand orientation and a negative rake geometry. The T1500Z manufacturer grade cermet substrate is applied via a PVD coating process, providing wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and light interrupted cuts on steel. With a 0.5079-inch insert length, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0313-inch corner radius, this insert delivers consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy in production turning environments.
This insert is suited for CNC lathe and turning center applications targeting steel (workpiece material code P) in both residential shop and industrial production settings. The EFL chip breaker geometry promotes effective chip evacuation during finishing and semi-finishing passes. Licensed machinists and CNC operators typically install these inserts in toolholders designed for the CNMG insert style, using the clamp-and-pin holding method. The CNMG insert style fits a wide range of standard CNMG-compatible toolholders commonly found in production machining cells.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement turning insert for CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thickness, and clamp-with-pin holding. Compatible with toolholders conforming to ANSI designation CNMG432 and ISO designation CNMG120408.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in an energy-isolated state before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert; do not substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and prevent premature edge failure. Follow the toolholder manufacturer guidelines for proper clamp-and-pin engagement.
