The SUMITOMO 192R291 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VNMA style, designed for precision metal-cutting operations on CNC and manual lathes. It carries the manufacturer grade AC415K with a CVD-applied coating and a proprietary FF finish that enhances wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted and continuous cuts. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape with a negative rake angle and a 0-degree relief (clearance code N), making it well suited for general turning where tool security and edge strength are the priority. The corner radius measures 0.0156 inches (1/64 inch) and the inscribed circle is 0.375 inches (3/8 inch).
This insert is intended for turning applications where cast iron and similar K-category workpiece materials are machined. It is held in the tool holder by a clamp-and-pin method, which provides rigid clamping under the high cutting forces typical in ferrous-metal turning. The A-style chip breaker geometry assists in chip control across moderate feed and depth-of-cut ranges common in production turning environments. Machinists and CNC operators working in job shops, production cells, and maintenance machining will find this insert suitable for facing, OD turning, and shoulder work within its designed cutting parameters.
Designed for use in VNMA-style insert pockets that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick turning insert with a clamp-and-pin holding method; compatible tool holders must conform to ANSI VNMA331 and ISO VNMA160404 insert seat specifications.
Insert seating and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked before handling cutting edges. Ensure the insert pocket and clamp components are clean and free of chips before seating the insert to achieve proper contact and clamping force. Use the correct torque for the clamp screw as specified by the tool holder manufacturer — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert edge condition at regular intervals and index or replace before catastrophic edge failure occurs.
