The SUMITOMO 18HMW0Q is a solid carbide grooving insert in the GND series, designed for external and face grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries a PVD-applied AC530U coating and features a neutral hand orientation with a GL chip breaker geometry. Cutting width is 2.36 mm (0.0938 inches) with a maximum depth of cut of 19.05 mm (0.7500 inches). The positive rake angle of 5 degrees and double-ended configuration make this insert well-suited for high-precision groove profiling in production turning environments. Licensed machinists and CNC toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
This insert is rated for primary use in stainless steel and carbon or alloy steel (ISO material codes M and P). Secondary workpiece material compatibility includes cast iron, hard materials, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium (ISO codes H, K, N, and S). The GND series is targeted at high-volume production turning where consistent groove width, controlled chip evacuation, and tool life under interrupted and continuous cuts are required. The insert conforms to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards and carries ANSI code GCMN2094R0.5-GL, making it compatible with standard insert-seating toolholders designed for size 2094 GCMN-style inserts.
Designed for use in GCMN-style insert seat toolholders with an insert seat size of 3, accepting the 2094 insert size code. Compatible with CNC lathes and turning centers performing grooving and parting operations on stainless steel, steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium workpieces.
Installation is performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the control placed in E-stop or locked out before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert clamp to the proper seating torque range indicated in the toolholder documentation. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper clamping and accurate cutting geometry.
