The SUMITOMO 18HMANG is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external and internal grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the GCM3002GF geometry in Sumitomo grade AC530U with a Super ZX PVD coating, this neutral-hand insert delivers a 3 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 20 mm. The AC530U grade is engineered for wear resistance and toughness in steel and stainless steel applications. With a 7-degree relief angle and a 0.20 mm corner radius, this insert is suited for tight-tolerance grooving where surface finish and dimensional control are critical. It is installed using a clamp-style holder and carries 2 cutting edges per insert.
This insert is intended for use in production turning environments where consistent groove geometry and extended tool life are priorities. It is appropriate for grooving ferrous materials including carbon steels, alloy steels, and stainless steels. The GF chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation in medium-depth grooving cuts. Machinists and CNC tooling technicians working in job shops, contract manufacturing, and production machining facilities are the primary installers of this insert. The GND series designation identifies the holder system compatibility family for correct seating and clamping.
Designed for use with GND series clamp-style grooving holders that accept GCM3002 insert size. Consult the SUMITOMO tooling catalog or holder documentation to confirm correct holder pairing before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing any insert. Ensure the insert pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before clamping. Apply specified clamping torque per the holder manufacturer guidelines and verify insert seating before resuming cutting operations.
