The SUMITOMO 18HMALW is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision groove-turning and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the manufacturer grade AC530U with a PVD-applied dual coating of AlCrN and TiAlN for high heat resistance and edge integrity under demanding cuts. The insert features a 0.1575 inch cutting width, a 0.0315 inch corner radius, and a double-end configuration that extends usable tool life. At an overall length of 1.0394 inches, it seats into GND-series toolholders via screw clamping. Licensed machinists and CNC setup technicians install this insert in production and job-shop turning applications.
This insert is optimized for primary workpiece materials including stainless steel and steel, with secondary suitability for cast iron, hard materials, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. The MG chip breaker geometry is suited to finishing and medium-duty grooving passes where controlled chip evacuation is critical. Screw-style clamping ensures repeatable seating and consistent cutting geometry across insert changes, making it well suited for high-mix CNC turning environments where downtime must be minimized.
Designed for use with GND-series grooving toolholders that accept insert seat size 4 and a screw-clamp holding method. Compatible with turning centers requiring a neutral-hand, double-end grooving insert with a 4.00 mm cutting width.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked out per site lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating the insert. Never attempt to seat or remove the insert while the machine is in cycle.
