Product Description

The SUMITOMO 18HMALK is a solid carbide grooving insert in the GND series, designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying grade AC530U with a dual-layer PVD coating of AlCrN and TiAlN, this insert delivers thermal resistance and edge durability across a range of workpiece materials. The cutting width measures 0.0787 inches (2.00 mm) and the cutting height is 0.1417 inches (3.60 mm), making it suited for shallow, tight-tolerance groove profiles. It uses a screw-clamping insert holding method and ships as a double-ended, neutral-hand insert. Machinists and toolroom technicians select this insert for finishing and semi-finishing grooves where surface integrity and dimensional accuracy are critical.

This insert is intended for use in metal-cutting applications involving stainless steel and steel as primary workpiece materials. Secondary material compatibility includes cast iron, hard materials, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. It fits GND series toolholders sized for the 2002 insert seat. The chip breaker geometry is GG, which is optimized for controlled chip formation during grooving passes. Typical installation environments include production turning cells and job shop lathes running ISO and ANSI-standard tooling systems.

Key Features

  • Solid carbide substrate with AC530U grade for wear resistance in ferrous and superalloy materials
  • PVD-applied AlCrN and TiAlN dual coating for thermal stability and reduced built-up edge
  • 0.0787 inch (2.00 mm) cutting width with a 0.0079 inch (0.20 mm) corner radius for tight groove tolerances
  • Double-ended neutral insert maximizes usable cutting edges per unit
  • GG chip breaker geometry promotes reliable chip evacuation during grooving passes
  • Screw-clamp holding method provides positive insert seating and repeatability

Compatibility

Designed for use in GND series grooving toolholders with a size 2 insert seat. ANSI code GCMN2002-GG. Conforms to ISO 13399 and ANSI standards. Compatible with primary workpiece materials stainless steel and steel, and secondary materials including cast iron, hard material, non-ferrous metal, superalloy, and titanium.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by machinist or toolroom personnel following standard CNC lathe lockout and toolholder changeout procedures. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer specification before running. Inspect the insert pocket and screw threads for debris or wear before seating a new insert. Never run a chipped or cracked insert, as carbide fracture during a cut presents a safety hazard.
