The SUMITOMO 186PALQ is a solid carbide grooving insert in the GND series, designed for external and face grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the GCMN2002GL designation with Sumitomo grade AC425K, a CVD-coated carbide grade optimized for cutting cast iron and similar K-class workpiece materials. The insert has a 2.00 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 19.05 mm, and a neutral hand orientation, making it usable in both left- and right-hand tool holders. The GL chip breaker geometry promotes positive-rake cutting action, reducing cutting forces and improving chip control in finish and semi-finish grooving passes.
This insert is suited for production turning environments where consistent groove width and surface finish are required on cast iron components. The double-ended design extends usable tool life by providing two cutting edges per insert. It fits standard GND-series grooving tool holders that accept size-2 insert seats. Machinists and CNC tool setup technicians working in automotive, heavy equipment, and general machining applications will find this insert appropriate for both interrupted and continuous grooving cuts in ferrous materials.
Designed for use in GND-series grooving tool holders accepting a size-2 insert seat. Compliant with ANSI and ISO 13399 standards; ANSI code GCMN2002-GL. Primary workpiece material is cast iron (ISO material group K).
Installation and indexing of carbide grooving inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tool setup technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine in a locked-out, tagged-out state. Use the correct insert clamp and seating screw torque per the tool holder manufacturer specifications; do not over-torque the clamping screw, as this can fracture the insert. Inspect the insert seat for chips or contamination before seating the insert. Verify tool overhang and insert orientation match the programmed grooving direction before resuming cutting.
