The SUMITOMO 16JRCWG is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for single-point precision turning of hard materials. It carries the ANSI designation NUTPGA221 and ISO code NU-TPGW110304, confirming compliance with both ANSI and ISO 13399 standards. The insert features a triangular shape with a 60-degree included angle, a positive rake geometry, and an uncoated BN2000 grade PCBN substrate. The inscribed circle measures 0.25 inches, insert thickness is 0.125 inches, and the corner radius is 0.0156 inches (1/64 inch). It is held by screw clamp and is intended for use by machinists and tooling professionals on CNC or manual turning centers targeting hardened workpieces.
The 16JRCWG is suited for turning hardened ferrous materials, including hardened steels and cast irons, in applications where conventional carbide tooling reaches its limits. With a primary workpiece material classification of H (Hard Material) and a positive-rake NU-TPGA insert style, this insert is configured for finish and semi-finish turning passes where edge integrity and thermal resistance are critical. The single cutting edge design and screw-mount holding method make it a direct-fit option in compatible TPGA-style toolholders used in production and job-shop environments.
Designed for use in screw-clamp TPGA-style toolholders accepting a triangular insert with a 0.25-inch inscribed circle and P clearance, G tolerance classification. Confirm toolholder insert pocket specifications before installation.
PCBN turning inserts should be installed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with indexable insert toolholders. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all energy is locked out before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to the toolholder manufacturers specified clamp screw torque range as listed in the toolholder documentation. Handle PCBN cutting edges with care, as the material is brittle and susceptible to chipping from impact or improper seating.
