The SUMITOMO 16JRCVX is a PCBN (Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) turning insert designed for high-performance single-point turning operations. Built to ANSI code NUTPG321 and ISO code NU-TPGN160304, this uncoated insert features a 60-degree triangular shape with a positive rake geometry and a 1/64 inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius. It is rated for machining cast iron, hard materials, and superalloys where extreme hardness and thermal resistance are required. Toolroom machinists and CNC turning specialists typically install this insert in compatible clamp-style toolholders for precision finishing and semi-finishing passes.
This insert is suited for demanding turning applications in industrial and manufacturing environments. Its PCBN composition makes it particularly effective on hardened ferrous materials and superalloy components where conventional carbide inserts lose performance. The neutral hand orientation and positive rake allow versatile application across a range of turning setups. Compatible with TPG-series clamp-style toolholders, it is used in both high-volume production and precision job-shop turning operations targeting cast iron, hard materials, and superalloy workpieces.
Designed for use in TPG-series clamp-style toolholders accepting a NUTPG321 triangular insert with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle. Intended for turning of primary workpiece materials including cast iron, hard materials, and superalloys (material codes H, K, S).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom technicians using appropriate clamp-style toolholding hardware for the TPG series. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and torque the clamp per the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Handle PCBN inserts with care — the cutting edge is brittle and can chip if dropped or impacted.
