The SUMITOMO 16JRCTU is an uncoated Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision machining of hardened steel. Cataloged under ANSI code 2NUDNGA431 and ISO code 2NU-DNGA150404, this insert features a 55-degree diamond shape, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64-inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius. The negative rake geometry and DNGA-style seating deliver controlled cutting forces and predictable tool life in demanding hard-turning applications. It is installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians working in precision metalworking environments.
This insert is suited for hard-turning operations on hardened steel workpieces, classified under workpiece material code H. The 2NU-DNGA insert style and clamp-plus-pin holding method make it compatible with standard DNGA toolholders used in production and job-shop turning centers. With two cutting edges per insert, it offers back-up cutting capability before replacement. Typical applications include finish turning of hardened shafts, bearing races, and similar components where tight tolerances and fine surface finish are required.
Designed for use in standard DNGA-style toolholders with clamp and pin holding methods. Compatible with turning centers and CNC lathes set up for negative-rake DNGA inserts with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle. Intended primary workpiece material is hardened steel (ISO material code H).
PCBN turning inserts should be seated and clamped according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications using the specified clamp-and-pin holding method. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Handle PCBN inserts carefully, as the cutting edges are brittle and susceptible to chipping from improper seating or mechanical shock. Verify toolholder and insert compatibility by confirming ANSI or ISO insert codes prior to installation.
