The SUMITOMO 16JRCTR is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision machining of hardened steel and similarly difficult-to-cut ferrous materials. Manufactured to ANSI code 2NUCNGA431 and ISO code 2NU-CNGA120404, this uncoated insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a negative rake geometry and a 1/2-inch inscribed circle. The 1/64-inch corner radius and clamp-and-pin holding method provide secure, repeatable positioning in compatible toolholders. With two cutting edges per insert, it delivers consistent performance across high-hardness turning applications where carbide tooling reaches its limits.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning of hardened steel components in manufacturing and job-shop environments. The BN2000 grade PCBN material is a recognized choice for hard turning operations on workpieces typically ranging into the higher hardness ranges where conventional abrasive or carbide tooling is impractical. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators working on lathes and turning centers equipped for CNGA-style insert toolholders. Applications span automotive, die-mold, and precision part production where tight tolerances and surface finish are critical.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement for CNGA-style insert seats in toolholders accepting an 80-degree diamond insert with a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, clamp-and-pin holding, and N clearance geometry per ANSI and ISO 13399 standards.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Shut down and lock out the machine before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping surfaces for debris or wear before installing a new insert to avoid premature edge failure.
