The SUMITOMO 16HUBXB is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert in the 4NC-CNGA style, manufacturer grade BNC160, designed for precision hard-turning and interrupted-cut applications on hardened ferrous materials. The insert features a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating for enhanced surface hardness and wear resistance. With a 1/2 inch inscribed circle, 0.0945 inch insert length, and a 1/32 inch corner radius, this insert is engineered for tight tolerances on CNC turning centers. It is installed by machinists and toolroom professionals operating high-speed, high-precision lathes.
The 16HUBXB is suited for finish and semi-finish turning of hardened steels and secondary workpiece materials classified as H-group (hardened steels). It belongs to the Series C insert family with an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape, providing two highly stable cutting points per face. With four total cutting edges, this insert delivers extended tool life per unit and is appropriate for both production environments and tight-tolerance job shop work where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are critical.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and direct-fit insert for CNGA-style toolholders accepting 1/2 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch thick, 80-degree diamond inserts. Compatible with clamp and pin style insert seats in the Series C format. Consult toolholder documentation for confirmed seat compatibility before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing any insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer specifications when tightening the clamping screw - do not over-torque. Inspect the insert pocket for damage, chips, or contamination before seating the new insert, as debris under the insert seat will cause premature edge failure or dimensional error.
