The SUMITOMO 16HQCAH is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert engineered for precision machining of non-ferrous materials. Identified by ANSI code NFVCMX221 and ISO code NF-VCMT110304, this insert carries the DA1000 manufacturer grade and features a positive rake geometry with a 10-degree rake angle and a 7-degree relief angle. The 35-degree diamond insert shape (Shape Code V) provides a sharp, defined cutting edge suited to high-precision lathe operations. A 1/64-inch (0.0156-inch) corner radius delivers tight-tolerance finishing passes, while the screw-clamp holding method ensures secure, repeatable seating in compatible toolholders. Licensed machinists, CNC operators, and tool-and-die professionals working with aluminum, copper, and other non-ferrous alloys are the primary installers of this insert.
This insert is intended for turning operations on non-ferrous metals such as aluminum alloys, copper, brass, and similar workpiece materials where PCD tooling delivers superior surface finish and extended tool life compared to carbide alternatives. The NF-VCMX insert style and Series V designation make it applicable in finish-turning and light semi-finish applications on CNC lathes and turning centers. The coated construction and positive rake angle reduce cutting forces and minimize built-up edge on soft, ductile materials. With an inscribed circle of 1/4 inch (0.2500 inch) and insert thickness of 1/8 inch (0.1252 inch), this insert fits standard V-style screw-clamp toolholders designed for the 221 insert size.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for Series V screw-clamp toolholders accepting 221-size diamond-shaped inserts with Clearance Code C and Tolerance Code M, per ANSI NFVCMX221 and ISO NF-VCMT110304 specifications.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered down and the spindle locked before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the manufacturer-recommended torque driver for the clamping screw to avoid over-tightening, which can fracture the PCD blank. Inspect the toolholder seat and clamping pocket for chips or debris before seating the insert, as contamination affects runout and surface finish. Dispose of used PCD inserts in accordance with shop waste protocols for synthetic diamond tooling.
