The SUMITOMO 16HQBZC is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert engineered for high-performance machining of non-ferrous metals. Built to the NF-CCMX insert style, it features an 80-degree diamond insert shape with a 3/8 inch (0.375 inch) inscribed circle and a 1/64 inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius. The positive rake angle of 10 degrees and 7-degree relief angle promote clean cutting action with reduced cutting forces. This insert is held by screw-style clamping and carries ANSI code NFCCMX32.51 and ISO code NF-CCMT09T304, making it straightforward to cross-reference against standard tooling catalogs. CNC machinists and tool-room technicians install this type of insert in compatible turning tool holders on CNC lathes and turning centers.
This insert is intended for turning operations on non-ferrous workpiece materials, including aluminum alloys, copper, brass, and similar materials where PCD tooling delivers superior surface finish and extended tool life compared to carbide. The X chip breaker geometry and positive rake design make it well-suited for finishing and light semi-finishing passes. It is used in production turning environments where tight tolerances and consistent surface quality are required. The uncoated PCD substrate performs best on abrasive non-ferrous materials where coatings provide minimal benefit.

Installation of turning inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine powered down or in a safe lockout state. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the tool holder manufacturer's specified procedure — do not over-torque the insert screw. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine tool manufacturer guidelines when changing inserts on CNC turning centers.
