The SUMITOMO 16DTWDN is a cubic boron nitride (CBN) turning insert designed for high-speed finish turning and hard-part machining applications. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process under the manufacturer grade BNC200, this insert delivers thermal resistance and edge stability when cutting hardened steels and similar difficult materials. The 80-degree diamond shape (insert shape code C) with a neutral hand orientation provides versatile tool engagement geometry. With an inscribed circle of 1/4 inch and a corner radius of 0.0078 inches, it is suited for precision finishing passes where tight tolerances are required. Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians.
This insert is intended for turning operations on hardened ferrous materials, including steels in the H20 material grade classification. The wiper edge geometry supports improved surface finish at standard feed rates. It belongs to Series C and conforms to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards, with an ISO code of 2NCCCGW09T302WG. Typical applications include OD turning on hardened steel components in production and job-shop environments. The multi-use designation indicates it is suitable across a range of compatible toolholders accepting CCGA-style inserts with the appropriate clearance and tolerance codes.
Designed for use in CCGA-style toolholders accepting a 1/4-inch inscribed circle insert with clearance code C and tolerance code G. Compatible with secondary workpiece material code H, corresponding to hardened steels. Refer to the ISO code 2NCCCGW09T302WG when cross-referencing toolholder catalogs.
This insert is installed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician using the appropriate CCGA toolholder with a pin and screw holding method. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Ensure the insert pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before installation to maintain proper seating and dimensional accuracy. Do not exceed the toolholder manufacturer's recommended clamping torque specification for the insert size.
