The SUMITOMO 16DTCEA is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating applied via PVD process. It is designed for precision turning operations on hardened ferrous materials, cast irons, and superalloys in CNC lathe and turning center applications. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape (ANSI shape code C), a negative rake geometry, and four usable cutting edges per insert. With a 1/2-inch inscribed circle and a 3/16-inch insert thickness, this insert fits standard CNGA-style toolholders. Machinists and CNC operators in production and job shop environments typically install and qualify this insert.
The 16DTCEA is suited for finishing and light semi-finishing passes on hardened steels, chilled cast iron, and hard-turning applications where CBN tooling replaces grinding. The 4NC-CNGA insert style and ISO code 4NC-CNGA120404 indicate compatibility with CNGA-format toolholders common in production turning cells. The BNC200 manufacturer grade is formulated for interrupted and continuous cuts on secondary workpiece material group H. A chip breaker style A is incorporated into the geometry to assist with chip control during hard-turning passes where maximum depth of cut is limited to 0.015 inches.
Designed for use in CNGA-style turning toolholders with clamp and pin holding methods. The ISO designation 4NC-CNGA120404 and ANSI insert style 4NC-CNGA confirm fitment in standard CNGA-format holders used on CNC lathes and turning centers. Verify toolholder bore diameter compatibility with the 0.2031-inch insert hole diameter before installation.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians following standard lathe tooling procedures. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct torque on the clamp screw per the toolholder manufacturer specification — do not over-torque. Inspect the toolholder seat and pin for wear or debris before seating a fresh insert, as contamination at the pocket face will affect insert stability and surface finish results.
