The SUMITOMO 16DTASZ is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision hard-turning applications. Manufactured in the BNC200 grade with a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) TiN coating, this insert delivers consistent performance on hardened ferrous materials. It features an 80-degree diamond (C-shape) geometry with a positive rake angle and a 7-degree relief angle. The 1/4-inch inscribed circle and 1/64-inch corner radius (0.0156 inches) suit fine-tolerance external turning operations. Two cutting edges per insert and screw-type insert holding make it a practical choice for CNC turning centers in production environments. Licensed machinists and tooling specialists typically specify this insert for hard-part turning cells.
The 16DTASZ is suited for hard-turning steel and other secondary workpiece materials classified under material code H. Its positive rake geometry reduces cutting forces on hardened workpieces, making it appropriate for tight-tolerance finish turning on CNC lathes and turning centers. The ANSI code 2NCCCGA21.51 and ISO code 2NC-CCGW060204 allow direct cross-reference when selecting compatible toolholders. Maximum depth of cut is 0.0150 inches, placing this insert in the finishing and semi-finishing range rather than roughing applications.
Designed for use in screw-clamp toolholders accepting CCGA-style inserts in the C series. ANSI code 2NCCCGA21.51 and ISO code 2NC-CCGW060204 can be used to identify compatible toolholder pockets. Verify toolholder seat geometry before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when torquing the clamping screw; do not over-tighten the clamp screw, as PCBN inserts are brittle and susceptible to fracture under excessive clamping force. Inspect the insert pocket seat for chips or debris before seating the insert.
