The SUMITOMO 16DTAEQ is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision metal cutting applications in CNC and manual turning operations. Manufactured to ANSI code 2NCCCGA32.50.5 and ISO code 2NC-CCGW09T302, this insert features a diamond (80-degree) shape with a positive rake geometry and a PVD-applied Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating in the BNC200 grade. It carries a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, a 0.0984 inch insert length, and a 0.0078 inch corner radius. The insert is held by screw clamping and is suited for machinists and tooling specialists working on hardened steel and difficult-to-machine materials.
The 16DTAEQ is intended for hard turning applications where consistent surface finish and tool life are critical. Its PCBN construction makes it appropriate for finishing and semi-finishing cuts on hardened steels, with a secondary workpiece material classification of Steel (H). The Series C designation, chip breaker style A, and 7-degree relief angle position this insert for light to moderate depths of cut up to 0.0150 inches. It is commonly used in production turning environments on CNC lathes by machining professionals and toolroom technicians.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement turning insert for screw-clamp toolholders accepting CCGA-style inserts with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle and Series C geometry, per ANSI code 2NCCCGA32.50.5 and ISO code 2NC-CCGW09T302.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine in a full stop and locked-out condition before handling inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the screw clamp per toolholder manufacturer torque guidance. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Verify depth-of-cut parameters do not exceed the 0.0150 inch maximum before resuming operation.
