The SUMITOMO 16CDW5R is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert engineered for precision machining of non-ferrous metals. It features an 80-degree diamond insert shape with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius, and a 5/32-inch insert thickness. The uncoated PCD cutting edge delivers exceptional hardness and wear resistance when turning aluminum, copper, brass, and other non-ferrous workpiece materials. The insert uses a screw-type holding method and carries a positive rake geometry, promoting clean chip evacuation and reduced cutting forces. It is installed by machinists, CNC operators, and toolroom professionals on turning centers and manual lathes.
This insert is suited for finishing and semi-finishing operations on non-ferrous metal components in both production and job-shop environments. The NF-CPMX insert style and X chip breaker geometry are designed for applications where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are priorities. It conforms to ANSI code NFCPMX32.51 and ISO code NF-CPMT09T304, making it straightforward to cross-reference within standard tooling systems. Grade DA2200 is a Sumitomo PCD grade selected for its edge retention in high-speed non-ferrous turning applications.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-fit PCD turning insert conforming to ANSI code NFCPMX32.51 and ISO code NF-CPMT09T304, compatible with toolholders accepting CPMX-style inserts with a 0.173-inch hole diameter and screw clamping.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct torque screwdriver specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as PCD inserts are brittle and can fracture under excessive clamping force. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert.
